Avtar K. – Managing Director & Executive Producer Behind Imposter.tv

Avtar K. is the kind of woman who makes you believe in the power of doing things your own way. Based in Brooklyn, she’s the Managing Director and Executive Producer at Imposter.tv, the boutique production company she co-founded in 2019 with a vision: to champion bold stories, fresh talent, and a more human way of making great work.

Her journey started back in 2003 on the set of a small indie film, where she fell in love with the chaos, energy, and magic of production. Since then, she’s shaped an inspiring career, producing standout work for clients including Google, Apple, Adidas, and IHG and music videos for artists including Red Hot Chili Peppers, Tove Lo, Diplo and The Lonely Island.

Known for her sharp style, grounded leadership, and unwavering creative spirit, Avtar continues to push boundaries while lifting up those around her — one beautifully crafted project at a time.

I first met Avtar in 2021, in the middle of the pandemic, and was immediately struck by her presence, the way she styles herself, the incredible work she leads, and the life story behind it all. She’s one of those people who carries creativity in everything she does. We asked her a few questions to dive deeper into her journey, her inspirations, and the spirit that makes her so unforgettable.

1. Can you tell us a bit about your journey in the creative industry and what led you to Imposter?
I started as a PA on a scrappy indie film in 2004—80-hour weeks, $70 a day, doing whatever needed doing. Total chaos. And I was obsessed. I loved the energy of set life—messy, collaborative, alive.

I spent the next 15 years freelancing in music videos and commercials, learning the ropes by working various roles on set. Eventually, I started producing—but I always had ideas about how things could be done better. That’s what led me to co-found Imposter: a production company built around creative integrity, respect, and the belief that treating people well makes the work better. Six years in, that still holds true.

2. Can you share a memorable moment in your career that had a significant impact on you?
Producing a music video that aired on the SNL season finale. That was a real “holy sh*t” moment—the kind of milestone that makes all the hustle feel worth it. It was surreal to be part of a show that I had watched since childhood, but also grounding.

3. How would you describe your personal style, and how does it influence your work?
Modern minimalism with bite. I’m into clean lines, structured silhouettes, vintage tailoring with a twist. I live in black, but green has my heart, and occasionally I throw in a bold pattern to mix things up. Nothing pink, nothing frilly.

Style-wise and work-wise, I like clarity with edge. I’m not afraid of bold choices—but they’re always intentional. I approach projects like I approach outfits: thoughtful, decisive, and built to make an impact.

4. How do you balance your personal life with your demanding career?
I treat my personal life like it’s non-negotiable. I work hard, but I make space for everything else that fills me up—friends, art, travel, a good night out. Weekends are sacred. And if I’m shooting abroad, I’ll tack on a few days to explore. That balance isn’t a luxury—it’s fuel.

5. What attracted you to the pieces you chose from Elena Matallana’s collection?
They sparkled. They were green. Enough said.

But really—Elena’s work is playful without being precious. It felt right for an event like the AICP gala at MoMA: bold, unexpected, and fun. I love when clothes match the energy of the room and elevate it.

6. What role does jewelry and accessories play in expressing yourself?
They’re the punctuation marks. I’ll keep the base simple—then dial it up with earrings the size of planets, a sculptural coat, or shoes that start conversations. It’s about contrast and confidence.

7. What do you look for when shopping — brand, style, sustainability, or price?
Style first, always. Sustainability is a big bonus. I don’t care about logos, but I do care about quality and values. I’ll splurge when something feels worth it—but I’ll just as happily dig through a thrift rack and find gold.

8. Less is more or more is more?
More… but make it intentional. It’s not about piling it on—it’s about knowing exactly where to turn up the volume.
